Sewing - All Levels (9 Weeks)
An all-levels course for learning how to sew. You do not need to own a sewing machine or have to have prior experience. The tutor is very knowledgeable and will support you whatever your level. On this course you will make a basic garment.
You will also learn:
• the basics of dressmaking.
• threading different machines.
• how to sew using different stitches
• how measure and record measurements accurately.
• how to adapt patterns in the construction of a simple garment.
• health and safety requirements in the studio and using the machines.
• be introduced to fabrics and cultural influences in fashion.
• learn some professional terminology.

Work safely and effectively when using tools, equipment and materials.

Thread up a sewing machine, use straight stitch, zig zag and thread tensions correctly. More advanced learners will use sewing techniques relevant to their project and be able to select appropriate fabric and calculate quantities.

Use basic sewing methods by hand and by sewing machine to make a garment or parts of a simple garment. More advanced learners will use a range of sewing methods to make up a garment to a professional standard.

Refer to your folder of hand-outs and your own sewn samples for an
overview of dressmaking techniques and professional terminology.

Use measurements accurately in constructing your garment. More advanced learners will adapt a pattern to fit.

Equipment Required

Equipment Required
For the first session you should bring a Note Book and Pencil. Some additional fabrics and haberdashery equipment will be needed: e.g. Fabric Shears (scissors), Tape Measure, Pins, Marking Chalk, Sewing Needles; your tutor will advise you on these. A commercial pattern can be ordered by your tutor.
An A4 folder for retaining samples/techniques is optional but very useful for reference.

What examination is there?

What examination is there?
At the beginning of the course the tutor will carry out an initial assessment to help identify the level of experience, knowledge or skills in this area.

The tutor will also carry out informal assessments to check your understanding, there is no exam.

You will complete a self-assessment at the beginning, middle and end of the course.

Your tutor will let you know how you are getting on throughout the course to you will help you work to your full potential.

At the end of the course you will receive written feedback.

How will I know I am making progress?

How will I know I am making progress?
You will have an ‘Individual Learning Plan’ where the course learning outcomes are shown and where you can set individual learning goals and monitor your own progress against these.

You will need to evaluate your own progress and manage your time.

Your tutor will give ongoing feedback and will keep you informed of your progress.

To maximise your chances of benefiting from the course fully we expect you to attend all scheduled sessions and that you do so punctually and are ready to start learning at the start of the class.

If you have declared a learning difficulty, disability or support need whilst enrolling and you require support/assistance in class or to complete your course, please discuss your needs with your tutor at the first lesson.

If you intend to take an examination and feel you have an additional learning need or special requirements, you must declare them to your tutor within the first 2 weeks of your course.

If you are studying in an online group, then you can arrange a one-to-one online discussion with your tutor, after the session, or by email.
