This qualification is designed to teach you to communicate using British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use.
This course will cover Unit 101 but does not include the assessment – see Examination/Assessment

You need to be able to read, understand and carry out verbal and written instructions in English.
BSL competence standards include requirements for candidates to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

Please bring your enrolment slip to the first session. You will need writing materials and a folder to store hand outs. We recommend you buy a copy of Start to Sign published by RNID.

This course does not include assessment for Unit 101 which will either take place at the start of Unit 102/103 course, or in a separate session for learners who do not wish to continue to complete the full award. An assessment and administration fee of £25 will be payable.
To achieve this unit, learners may show that they can understand and use basic language in everyday situations. Learners must demonstrate that they can meet and greet, understand basic conversation and numbers, give and follow simple directions and information.
Unit BSL101 is internally assessed by the tutor.

Other Info
We expect you to attend all classes, be on time and complete any homework given by your tutor. BSL needs to be practised at home and at local Deaf Clubs. You will need to attend your local Deaf Club at least once during this course and practise the signs by communicating and meeting with deaf people.
