This is a Becoming Confident with Numbers and Mental Maths course which is perfect for anyone who wants to sharpen their maths skills. We’ll cover the essentials like arithmetic and estimation but with a practical twist that fits right into your everyday life.
Whether you're figuring out your weekly budget, estimating costs at work, or solving real-life puzzles without reaching for a calculator, this course helps you build confidence and speed. You’ll discover clever visual methods, boost your mental maths, and learn to use key maths vocabulary like a pro.
By the end, you’ll be solving problems faster, smarter, and with a smile. Maths won’t just make sense it’ll make your life easier.

* Round and estimate confidently in everyday situations—adjust numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1, mentally add and subtract, and predict totals for shopping, bills, or budgeting with ease.
* Draw and diagram maths problems using bar models and visuals—break down wordy scenarios, plan step-by-step solutions, and build confidence in tackling multi-step challenges involving fractions and percentages.
* Apply mental strategies and use calculators to work out discounts and bills—quickly find common percentages like 10%, 20%, or 50%, estimate savings using the “10% method,” and check accuracy with digital tools.
* Estimate and calculate budgets for real-life goals—work out weekly or monthly income and spending, create savings plans for holidays or home projects, and solve problems involving shared costs or discounts.

You will need to complete a diagnostic tool used to evaluate your current skills and knowledge before starting a course. It helps identify your strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring that the course content is tailored to your needs. By understanding your baseline skills the tutor will adjust teaching methods and provide targeted support, enhancing your learning experience and helping you achieve your goals effectively.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your Maths you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80%
