Course Overview
Do you want to speak English confidently and take part in discussions in everyday life, work and study?
This course will help you develop the speaking and listening skills you need to communicate clearly and confidently in a wide range of real-life situations. You will practise taking part in discussions, asking and answering questions, giving short presentations, and explaining your ideas.
You will talk about everyday topics such as your home, hobbies, local events, news stories, and experiences. You will also learn how to make plans, give instructions, and explain your opinions clearly.
You will practise listening to conversations, instructions and short talks, and learn how to understand the main ideas and important details. You will also develop your pronunciation, intonation and fluency to help you communicate more effectively with others.
You will learn to use a wider range of vocabulary and more accurate grammar to express your ideas, take part in longer conversations, and respond in different situations at work, home and in your community.
By the end of the course, you will feel confident taking part in discussions, giving short presentations, and understanding spoken English in a variety of situations. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 3 Speaking and Listening qualification.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to learn.
You will make a simple learning plan together to help you improve your English step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task about something important in your life. This task will help you practise your speaking and listening and show your progress.
Examples of personal tasks include:
- take part in discussions and share your opinions with reasons
- ask and answer questions in different situations (e.g. at work or in services)
- give a short talk about a familiar topic (e.g. an experience or event)
- listen to short talks or conversations and identify the main points and key details
- take part in a role-play (e.g. solving a problem or making arrangements)

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, speaking to staff, making a phone call, or asking for information).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your English.
You will complete the Ascentis Entry 3 Speaking and Listening assessment during the course in your classroom with your teacher and other learners.
There are three parts:
Listening: listen to recordings and answer questions about main points, details and instructions
Conversation: take part in a role-play conversation
Presentation and Discussion: give a short talk and take part in a discussion by listening and asking questions

You will practise these tasks regularly in class so you feel confident and ready.
At the end of the course, you will talk about your progress and your next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
