Course Overview

Course Overview
Do you want to write in English more clearly and confidently for everyday life, work and study?
This course will help you develop the writing skills you need to communicate in real-life situations. You will practise writing for different purposes, such as filling in forms, writing messages and emails, and producing short texts for everyday situations.
You will learn how to write clearly and accurately using simple sentence structures, correct punctuation and spelling. You will also learn how to organise your ideas and make your writing more interesting using adjectives and linking words.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident writing independently and using English in everyday situations. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 2 Writing qualification, with the skills to complete a range of writing tasks successfully. These skills will help you write information that other people can understand clearly.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to learn.
You will make a simple learning plan together to help you improve your writing step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task about something important in your life. This task will help you practise your writing skills and show your progress.
Examples of personal tasks include:
- write a short message or email for a real situation (e.g. asking for information or making a request)
- complete a form with your personal information (e.g. name, address, contact details)
- write a short text about an activity or experience (e.g. a visit, a plan or an event)
- write a simple message using time phrases (e.g. “I will meet you at 3pm”, “I went yesterday”)
- organise ideas in a short piece of writing using linking words (e.g. “and”, “but”, “because”)

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, writing a message or completing a form for a service).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your English.
You will also complete the Ascentis Entry 2 Writing assessment during the course in your classroom with your teacher. In the assessment, you will complete three tasks, including filling in a form and writing a short informal and formal text.
You will practise these types of tasks regularly in class so you feel confident and ready.
At the end of the course, you will talk about your progress and your next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
