Course Overview

Course Overview
Do you want to read English confidently and understand more detailed information in everyday life, work and study?
This course will help you develop the reading skills you need to understand a wide range of texts in real-life situations. You will read different types of texts such as health leaflets, recycling guidelines, food labels, local news articles, and event information.
You will learn how to find important details, understand the main ideas, and recognise the purpose of different texts. You will also learn how to identify key features such as persuasive language, sequence words, and how information is organised.
You will build your confidence reading longer and more detailed texts and using English to understand information independently.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident reading and understanding a range of texts in everyday situations. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 3 Reading qualification, with the skills to answer questions on meaning, detail and purpose.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to learn.
You will make a simple learning plan together to help you improve your reading step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task about something important in your life. This task will help you practise your reading skills and show your progress.
Examples of personal tasks include:
- read longer texts (e.g. articles, leaflets or notices) and - identify the main points and key details
- read different types of texts (e.g. forms, timetables or websites) and find and interpret information
- read texts and identify their purpose and tone (e.g. information, instructions, persuasion)
- read instructions and follow them accurately (e.g. recipes, labels or directions)
- read texts and explain how language features help meaning (e.g. sequence words, persuasive language)

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, reading information from a service or understanding a leaflet).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your English.
You will complete the Ascentis Entry 3 Reading assessment during the course in your classroom with your teacher. In the assessment, you will read a range of texts and answer questions to show you understand main ideas, key details, purpose and language features.
You will practise these types of tasks regularly in class so you feel confident and ready.
At the end of the course, you will talk about your progress and your next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
