Course Overview
Do you want to feel more confident reading English in everyday life, work and study?
This course will help you develop the reading skills you need to understand information in real-life situations. You will practise reading a range of texts such as school letters, GP appointment notices, bus timetables, workplace signs, and information from websites or local services.
You will learn how to find important information quickly, understand the purpose of different texts, and follow written instructions. You will also build your confidence reading longer and more detailed texts.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident understanding written English and using it in everyday situations. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 2 Reading qualification, with the skills to read different types of texts and answer questions about meaning and detail.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to learn.
You will make a learning plan together to help you improve your English step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task about something important in your life. This task will help you use English in real situations and show your progress.
Examples of personal tasks include:

compare prices and explain your choice (e.g. in a shop or online)
read a bill or receipt and explain the key information (price, date, total)
ask for information about an item or payment and understand the answer
write a short message or email about shopping or spending (e.g. asking about an item)
follow instructions to complete a task (e.g. using a machine or paying for something)

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, comparing prices in a shop or understanding a receipt).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your English.
You will also complete the Ascentis Entry 2 Reading assessment during the course in your classroom with your teacher. In the assessment, you will read different types of texts and answer questions to show you understand key information, main ideas and the purpose of texts.
You will practise these types of tasks regularly in class so you feel confident and ready.
At the end of the course, you will talk about your progress and your next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
