Do you want to feel confident speaking and understanding English in everyday life?
This course will help you develop the speaking and listening skills you need to communicate in real-life situations. You will practise understanding spoken English and speaking clearly when talking to other people.
You will learn useful language for everyday situations such as talking to teachers, neighbours, shop assistants and health staff. You will practise conversations, asking and answering questions, and giving simple information about yourself and your life.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident taking part in conversations and understanding spoken English. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 1 Speaking and Listening qualification.
In this course you will:
- take part in short conversations with other learners
- practise listening to and understanding spoken messages
- speak to ask for and give information in real situations

* listen to short spoken messages (e.g. instructions or questions) and understand the main idea
* listen to simple spoken information (e.g. in a shop or at an appointment) and identify key details such as time, price or place
* follow single-step spoken instructions (e.g. “Sit down”, “Write your name”, “Come here”)
* ask for information using simple questions (e.g. “What time is it?”, “Where is the bus stop?”, “Can you help me?”)
* respond to simple questions using short sentences (e.g. “I live in London”, “I am 30 years old”)
* speak clearly using common words so people can understand in everyday situations
* use simple spoken sentences in real-life situations (e.g. in shops, at appointments, in school or on public transport)
* give simple personal information using present simple (e.g. name, age, address, appointment time)
* take part in short conversations by asking and answering questions about familiar topics
* express simple opinions using everyday language (e.g. “I like coffee”, “I don’t like cold weather”)

Entry requirements

Entry requirements
This is a course for learners working towards ESOL Entry 1.
This means you can:

understand simple spoken English in everyday situations
follow basic instructions in class
say a few words and short sentences about yourself
answer simple questions using single words or short phrases

You may have completed a First Steps or Pre-Entry course, or you may already have some basic English skills.
You will complete an initial assessment before starting the course to make sure this course is right for you.

• Pens & pencils
• Lined A4 paper
• A smartphone (if you have one)
• A reusable water bottle
We will give you WiFi in your first lesson.
If you do not have a phone or computer, talk to your teacher.
You will need a Gmail account. Your teacher can help you set this up.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to learn.
You will make a simple learning plan together to help you improve your English step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task about something important in your life. This task will help you practise your speaking and listening and show your progress.
Examples of personal tasks include:
- listen to short spoken messages and identify key information (e.g. time, place, name)
- follow simple spoken instructions (e.g. “Write your name”, “Come here”)
- ask and answer simple questions in a short conversation (e.g. “Where do you live?”, “What time is it?”)

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, asking for information in a shop or speaking to staff in a service).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your English.
You will also practise the Ascentis Entry 1 Speaking and Listening assessment tasks during the course. These include listening to short recordings and identifying key information, taking part in a short role-play, and joining a small group discussion.
At the end of the course, you will complete your Ascentis Entry 1 Speaking and Listening assessment in your classroom.
At the end of the course, you will talk about your progress and your next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
