How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do and what you want to improve.
You will make a simple learning plan together to help you develop your speaking and listening skills step by step.
As part of your learning, you will complete a short personal task to practise your communication skills in real-life situations.
Examples of personal tasks include:
- listen to a talk or conversation and identify main ideas and key details
- take part in a role-play or conversation (e.g. workplace or service situation)
- give a short presentation on a familiar topic and answer questions
- take part in a group discussion and share your opinions with reasons
- follow and give instructions clearly in a practical situation

Some tasks may include real-life activities outside the classroom (for example, speaking in a work or community setting).
You will keep your work in a folder. Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve your accuracy, fluency and confidence.
You will complete the Ascentis Level 1 Speaking and Listening assessment during the course in your classroom with your teacher and other learners.
The assessment includes three tasks:
Task 1: Listening – listen to recordings and answer questions on main ideas, details and instructions
Task 2: Conversations – take part in formal and informal role-plays
Task 3: Presentation and Discussion – give a short presentation followed by a group discussion (you will receive your topic in advance to prepare)
You will practise these tasks regularly in class so you feel confident and ready.
At the end of the course, you will review your progress and plan your next steps.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
