Course Overview

Course Overview
In this course, you'll use digital tools for more purposeful, real-life tasks. You'll learn to enter information into a spreadsheet, use online services for things you'd normally do in person, and understand how to protect yourself online. Everything you learn has a practical reason behind it.
By the end, you'll have the skills and confidence to move on to our digital skills exam course at entry 3.

What will you learn and be able to do?

What will you learn and be able to do?
* Use online services to do practical things you'd normally do in person or by phone so you can access services more easily and at times that suit you - such as booking a GP appointment, checking your council tax balance, renewing a library book, or registering for a course.
* Write emails for different situations so your emails are well laid out, formatted well and appropriate for formal as well as informal purposes - such as emailing your child's teacher to explain an absence with a clear subject line and appropriate greeting, or writing to your friend to organise a party.
* Protect yourself online by understanding common risks and good habits so you and your family stay safe when using the internet - such as recognising phishing emails that pretend to be from your bank, creating strong passwords that are hard to guess, and understanding why you shouldn't use the same password for your email, your bank, and your social media.
* Use AI such as copilot so you can use it to help you with your writing - such as writing a polite email to your child's teacher, or writing a complaint to a company.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
Your tutor will talk with you about what you can do well and how you can improve. Together, you'll create a learning plan. As part of this plan, you'll work on a short personal task - such as creating a simple spreadsheet listing your weekly expenses and totalling them, using a real website to book an appointment, or writing a clear email to someone you need to contact for a real reason.
You'll keep a folder of your classwork and homework. Your tutor will give you feedback to help you improve. At the end of the course, you'll discuss your progress and next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
