Course Overview

Course Overview
Have you never used a computer before? Or does technology feel confusing and unfamiliar? This course is for you.
In this course, you'll start from the very beginning. We'll show you how to turn on a computer, hold and move a mouse, tap on a keyboard, and find your way around the screen. You'll also learn how to use a smartphone for simple everyday tasks.
Everything is taught slowly and patiently, with lots of practice time. By the end of this course, you'll feel comfortable sitting at a computer and doing basic tasks on your own.

What will you learn and be able to do?

What will you learn and be able to do?
* Turn on a computer, log in, and find your way around the screen using a mouse and keyboard so you can sit down at any computer and get started without needing someone to help you..
* Use a web browser to search for useful information online so the internet becomes something you can use in your everyday life - such as for finding the phone number of your GP surgery, checking bus times for a journey you need to make, or looking up the opening hours of your local Idea Store.
* Understand that not everything online is safe, and know how to stay cautious so you can start using the internet with confidence rather than fear- such as not clicking on things you're unsure about, not sharing your password, and asking your tutor if something looks suspicious.
* Use a smartphone for simple everyday tasks so you feel more confident using the phone you carry every day - such as making a phone call, sending a text message to a friend or family member, and taking a photo.
* Save your work and Shut down a computer properly at the end of a session and understand why this matters so you develop good habits from the start and your work isn't lost.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do well and how you can improve. Together, you'll create a learning plan to help you organise your learning and make progress.
As part of this plan, you'll work on a short personal task about something important to you. This task will help you develop your skills and show you the progress you're making. Examples of personal tasks at this level include: type your full name and address into a document on the computer; use Google to find the phone number of a place you need to contact; take a photo on your phone and show your tutor how you did it.
You'll keep a folder of your classwork and homework. Your tutor will give you feedback on your work to help you improve.
At the end of the course, you'll discuss your progress and next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
