Course Overview

Course Overview
Have you never used a computer before? Or does technology feel confusing and unfamiliar? This course is for you.
In this course, you'll learn to do more on your own. You'll write and save simple documents, send and receive emails, and use the internet more confidently for everyday tasks. You'll also start to understand how to keep your files organised so you can find things when you need them.
By the end, you'll be comfortable using a computer for simple everyday tasks - and you'll be ready to move on to our entry 2 course, Becoming confident in digital skills.

What will you learn and be able to do?

What will you learn and be able to do?
* Open a word processor and type a short, useful piece of text so you can use the computer for practical everyday writing - such as a shopping list, a message to a neighbour, or a note to remind yourself about an appointment, and make simple changes like correcting a spelling mistake or deleting a word.
* Send and receive emails so you can communicate with people and organisations digitally - such as reading a message from your child's school and writing a short reply, or sending a new email to someone with a clear subject line like "Question about my appointment".
* Use the internet to find specific information you need - such as searching for the opening hours of your local market, finding out how to get to a place by bus, or looking up a word you don't know - so the internet becomes a useful everyday tool rather than something confusing.
* Use a smartphone to download and open a useful app - such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, or your bank's app - so you can do more with the phone you already carry.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you can do well and how you can improve. Together, you'll create a learning plan to help you organise your learning and make progress.
As part of this plan, you'll work on a short personal task about something important to you. This task will help you develop your skills and show you the progress you're making. Examples of personal tasks at this level include: type your full name and address into a document on the computer; use Google to find the phone number of a place you need to contact; take a photo on your phone and show your tutor how you did it.
You'll keep a folder of your classwork and homework. Your tutor will give you feedback on your work to help you improve.
At the end of the course, you'll discuss your progress and next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
