Course Overview
This practical course offers the opportunity to go further into creating and leading guided walks in Tower Hamlets, with a strong focus on real world practice. Learners will build on existing interests or experience to explore how stories, routes and places come together in engaging outdoor guided walks.

The course combines four classroom based sessions with two outdoor sessions:
• a tutor led walk exploring a proposed route, and
• a learner led guided walk where participants contribute their own stories and guiding skills.
Through discussion, planning and supported practice, learners will gain a deeper understanding of how Tower Hamlets’ streets, buildings and communities reflect wider histories of change, creativity and diversity.

This course is suitable for people who have completed an introductory guiding or storytelling course, as well as those with informal experience of sharing local knowledge who want to develop their skills further.

* Plan and shape elements of a guided walking route in Tower Hamlets, using established guiding and storytelling techniques.
* Apply practical safety and group management considerations when guiding or contributing to outdoor walks.

* Identify key aspects of the East End’s historical, social and cultural life, including migration, creativity and community change.
* Contribute effectively to an outdoor guided walk, using communication and presentation skills developed on the course.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements
This course is suitable for both newcomers and those who have previous experience of basic guiding.
You will be able to speak English clearly and follow verbal and written instructions. You will also be able to read English fluently.
You will need to be able to walk comfortably for 2 hours with regular stops on outdoor visits.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
The tutor will give on-going feedback during the course, particularly by means of the mid-course assessment

Students are encouraged to monitor their progress and achievement using an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

You will also gain more from the course if you commit time to it outside the classroom

No formal examination or assessment. All learners will be asked to carry out two tasks. The first is to devise a report on a hypothetical tour, based on a specified locality, to be presented in class. The second is to prepare a presentation on a pre-assigned topic as part of a guided tour to be given outdoors in the ninth session.
A certificate will be awarded to learners providing they have achieved all the assessment criteria and have attended a minimum of 80% of the course.

In general, we will not allow late enrolment to any course after the first two weeks.

Children are not allowed in our health & fitness courses unless they are specifically family learning classes. Please do not ask your tutor to give your child access as they do not have the authority to do this.

Health and Safety requirements demand that all learners participating in fitness classes must complete the warm up. Therefore, latecomers that miss the warm up will be refused entry to the session.
