Do you want to feel confident reading English in your daily life?
This course will help you develop the reading skills you need to understand real-life information such as messages, signs, forms, and simple instructions.
You will practise reading English through everyday situations like checking a message, reading a bus ticket, or understanding a note from a school or service. You will learn how to find important information quickly and understand what you need to do.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident reading independently and using English to understand the world around you. You will also be prepared for the Ascentis Entry 1 Reading qualification.
In this course you will
- read real-life texts such as messages, forms, and signs
- practise finding important information quickly
- build confidence reading English independently

* read common everyday words (e.g. names, places, signs) and match them to pictures or meaning
* read simple sentences and follow instructions (e.g. “Write your name”, “Tick the box”)
* read short texts (e.g. messages, notices, forms) and identify key information (e.g. name, date, time, place)
* read simple questions and choose the correct answer (e.g. “Where do you live?” with options)
* read real-life texts (e.g. tickets, labels, receipts) and find specific information (e.g. price, time)
* read simple forms and recognise personal information (e.g. name, address, phone number)
* use simple reading strategies (e.g. recognising familiar words and using pictures) to understand meaning

Entry requirements

This is a course for learners working towards ESOL Entry 1.
This means you can:

understand simple spoken English
recognise some common words
read simple texts with support

You will complete an assessment before starting the course.

Equipment required
Please bring to every lesson:
• A folder
• Pens & pencils
• Lined A4 paper
• A smartphone (if you have one)
• A reusable water bottle
We will give you WiFi in your first lesson.
If you do not have a phone or computer, talk to your teacher.
You will need a Gmail account. Your teacher can help you set this up.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
At the start of the course, your tutor will help you identify what you can already read and what you want to improve.
You will practise reading through real-life tasks and activities.
Examples of personal tasks include:

read a message and identify key information (e.g. time, place)
read a form and find personal details
read a ticket or receipt and understand important information
read simple instructions and follow them correctly

You will also complete practice assessment tasks to prepare for your qualification.
Your tutor will give you feedback to help you improve your reading skills.
At the end of the course, you will complete an Ascentis Entry 1 Reading assessment.
You must attend at least 80% of your classes.
