Do you want to use English confidently in your life, work, and community?
This course helps you develop the English skills you need to communicate effectively in workplaces, services, and your local community.
You will build your speaking, reading, writing, and listening through activities based on everyday situations such as using services, understanding information, and taking part in community life.
You will also explore topics such as health, environment, local services, and cultural events.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident using English independently in different areas of your life.
In this course you will
• use English to understand and access local services (e.g. GP, council, transport)
• discuss community issues (e.g. recycling, environment)
• read and respond to information about services and events
• write messages, emails, and short texts for real purposes

* give advice in everyday and community situations using modal verbs (e.g. “should”, “must”)
* write simple process texts (e.g. recycling or using services) using sequencing language and passive voice
* take part in discussions about community and environmental issues, explaining ideas using appropriate vocabulary

This is a course for learners working towards ESOL Level 1.
This means you can communicate in a range of everyday situations, understand longer texts, and write short texts with some accuracy.

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
From the start of the course, your tutor will help you identify your strengths and areas to improve.
You will create a learning plan to develop your ability to use English in everyday life, work, and community situations.
As part of your learning, you will complete a personal task that uses English in real-life contexts.
Examples of personal tasks include:
• read and explain information from a service (e.g. GP, transport, local council)
• write an email to ask for information or give feedback (e.g. service enquiry or complaint)
• describe an experience using past and present forms accurately
• give advice using modal verbs (e.g. “You should…”, “You must…”)
• explain a process using sequencing language and passive forms (e.g. recycling, services)
Some tasks may include real-life activities such as using services, finding information, or discussing community issues.
You will keep your work in a folder and receive feedback to help you improve your communication skills.
At the end of the course, you will review your progress and plan your next steps.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
