Course Overview

Course Overview
This course helps you become more independent with technology. You'll learn to write documents that look good, use email for more than simple messages, find and compare information online, and use digital tools for practical purposes - like joining a video call with your child's school or filling in an online registration form.
By the end of this course, you'll be able to handle everyday digital tasks without needing help - and you'll be ready for part 2.

What will you learn and be able to do?

What will you learn and be able to do?
* Create a short document with basic formatting so the things you write on a computer look clear, organised, and professional - such as writing a notice about a community event using bold text and bullet points, or preparing a simple CV with headings and your contact details.
* Use email more confidentally every day - such as sending a photo of a form to your housing officer as an attachment, managing your inbox by replying to important messages and deleting ones you don't need, and copying and pasting useful information from a website into an email.
* Find and compare information online so you can make decisions using the internet - such as looking up the cost of an English course at two different colleges, or checking whether a website looks trustworthy before giving it your details.
* Use digital tools to access services and stay connected so you can do things confidentally online - such as filling in an online form on gov.uk, registering for a idea store library card, joining a video call on Zoom or WhatsApp for a parents' evening, or changing the text size on your phone so it's easier to read
* Copy and paste text between documents and apps so you can work more efficiently without retyping information you've already found - such as copying an address from a website into an email, or moving a paragraph from one document to another

How will you know you are making progress?

How will you know you are making progress?
Your tutor will talk with you about what you can do well and how you can improve. Together, you'll create a learning plan. As part of this plan, you'll work on a short personal task - such as creating a simple spreadsheet listing your weekly expenses and totalling them, using a real website to book an appointment, or writing a clear email to someone you need to contact for a real reason.
You'll keep a folder of your classwork and homework. Your tutor will give you feedback to help you improve. At the end of the course, you'll discuss your progress and next steps with your tutor.
You need to attend at least 80% of your classes.
